School of Public Policy Hosts Talk on US Jails and Public Hospitals

Sociologist Armando Lara-Millán will speak about his new book, Redistributing the Poor: Jails, Hospitals, and the Crisis of Law and Fiscal Austerity, at a virtual event open to the UMass Amherst community on Wednesday, July 14, at 2 p.m.

The event is sponsored by the School of Public Policy.

Brian Sargent, assistant professor in the School of Public Policy and the Department of Sociology, will moderate a conversation with Lara-Millán, SPP Director Alasdair Roberts, and Aaron Foote, a UMass Sociology Department alumnus and faculty member.

Lara-Millán, a faculty member at the UC Berkeley Department of Sociology, is an ethnographer and historical sociologist who studies how powerful organizations shape the life fortunes of large numbers of people, in contexts including law, medicine, criminal justice, economic pricing, and urban poverty governance.

Registration is required. The event is open to members of the UMass Amherst community.
