Andrew Abramson, a senior majoring in Economics, participated in SBS in DC Summer 2021. Here, he talks about why you might want to apply for SBS in DC. Applications for Summer 2022 are open in Handshake TODAY, until October 17th (11:59pm)!
Are you a sophomore or junior in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences? Are you looking for experiential learning or internship opportunities? Do you want to spend a summer living in and exploring Washington, DC? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you should apply to SBS In DC!
In a recent post, my friend, former DC housemate, and SBS In DC Program Fellow Irina Costache gave some compelling reasons for applying to the program. Her Communications and Policy internship at the Environmental and Energy Study Institute was very different from my survey-consulting internship at Lincoln Park Strategies this summer. There, I put my economics and quantitative background to good use. I helped draft and edit reports, calculated trends and public opinion distributions, and designed graphics.
The differences in our internships are a great representation of the wide variety of options available to students in the program. Members of the cohort interned on Capitol Hill for United States Senators, Representatives, and Committees. Others interned for a political party, a private equity firm, nonprofits, and advocacy groups. And, some interned for communications firms and government entities. The possibilities are endless — especially with the growing alumni network of DC professionals that SBS in DC is connected to.
Internships, a professional development course, and alumni networking are not the only parts of the program, however. Along with free housing in DC comes a “do something new every day” attitude. Exploring DC is not just an added bonus of the program — it’s actively encouraged! This summer, our cohort got to live a short way away from the National Mall, right near a Metro station, and with an endless number of cafés and restaurants to try out.I was able to learn how to navigate the DC Metro and bus systems and walk around one of the most walkable cities in the country. The opportunities are endless, and SBS In DC makes it all possible!
If you are considering moving to DC for work after graduation, this program is definitely for you! By spending the summer there, I’m able to talk to locals and network with DC professionals — and actually know what the city has to offer. In future job interviews and networking events, being able to form relationships with people who live in DC by talking to them about my own experiences there will prove as important as the skill sets on my resume.
