Last week, 22 SBS students converged on Washington DC to begin an exciting journey as the first ever SBS in DC Fall cohort. This group is paving the way for future SBS students to live and learn together in DC during the Fall or Spring semesters.
For the past six years, SBS in DC has provided opportunities for over 100 students to engage in summer internships and professional development in the nation’s capital. Through a new partnership with The Washington Center’s Academic Internship Program, we have reimagined SBS in DC as an academic-term program that will include an academic course component aligned with different SBS majors, in addition to internships, professional development, and alumni mentorship. Students can select a course offered by faculty from DC-area universities and/or experts in their fields. Courses such as Security and Peace in International Relations, Media Management, or The First Amendment complement internships in Federal Agencies, Public Relations, Law Firms, and the Hill, to name a few.
The 2024 Fall cohort began their time in DC with a scavenger hunt, discovering well known and obscure landmarks around the city. They participated in other orientation activities and had the long weekend to settle into their apartments in TWC’s Residential Academic Facility before starting their internships on Tuesday morning. Throughout the semester they will be interning 35-40 hours a week at various locations around the DC metro area.
