Position Overview
The Office of the Assistant Commissioner for Health Equity (OACHE) fosters collaborative partnerships across the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH), the Executive Office of Health and Human Services (EOHHS), local governments, and community partners . OACHE oversees the Office of Health Equity and Community Engagement (OHECE) which has purview over the Division of Community Engagement (DCE).
The DCE mission focuses on cultivating collaborative and inclusive partnerships and co-creating solutions to build and sustain equity-centered approaches to improve the health and well-being of all people in Massachusetts. The DCE team consists of full-time community liaisons to build on and improve the Department’s engagement with identified priority populations across the Commonwealth. This internship is within the Tribal Health Program within the DCE. This program exists to build partnerships with Tribes, Indigenous communities, Tribal Serving Organizations, and Native American serving programs within other organizations (Tribal Health Partners).
Responsibilities
This internship will work closely with the Tribal Health Strategist and others within the division to support the evolving work of the DCE’s Tribal Health Program within the DCE. Responsibilities will include, though not limited to:
- Creating community profiles on all Massachusetts and New England Tribes to include brief historical background, government /organizational structure, directory of leadership and staff, etc. that will be used to increase effective communication, and develop appropriate communication and engagement protocols.
- Identify health trends, and priorities related to social determinants of health and public health outcomes in Indigenous communities.
- Support daily operations and administrative tasks in the Tribal Heath program such as scheduling and participating in meetings, planning webinars, and other activities.
- Complete research of Tribal Health Offices in other states to understand their infrastructure and best practices in relationship building, collaboration, and consultations to inform the work ofthe DCE Tribal Program.
- Support the Tribal Health Strategist to inform/frame drafting protocols, technical assistance, and draft proposals to senior leadership that would support and address the Tribal needs.
- Support an external mapping to identify partners who are working with Tribes and Tribal Serving Organizations (TIPSOs) including non-profits, agencies, hospitals, health programs across the public health spectrum, educational institutions, and any other potential partners to create and enhance the pipeline for awareness and education about Tribal and Indigenous affairs and increase potential partnership that leads to increased critical resource allocations opportunities for resources to Tribes and Tribal individuals, stronger partnerships and meaningful relationships between state and Tribes.
Qualifications Desired
A degree-seeking student in an undergraduate or graduate program, preferably in the following concentrations: Public Health, Public Health Administration, Health Policy, Ethnic Studies, Native American/Indigenous Studies, Sociology (data-driven and community-based research), and or any other equivalent/similar educational credentials .
