In Carla’s role as Program Coordinator, Centers & Initiatives at Council on Social Work Education, Carla promotes the values of social work and related policies, such as academic freedom, substance use recovery, healthcare, and higher education. She plays an integral part implementing grant and programming initiatives, including CSWE’s Substance Use Disorders Education and Leadership Scholars Program and the Social Work Doctoral Student Policy Fellowship. Carla says she is passionate about bridging the gap between policy research and practice, and helping social work students get the skills they need to help their communities.
Prior to this role, Carla held the following positions: Humanitarian Policy Associate at InterAction; Sustainable Energy and Environment Fellow at Friends Committee on National Legislation; and Program Coordinator for the Program on Nuclear Issues, Center for Strategic and International Studies. While at UMass she was a Campaign Intern for Josh Harder for Congress; a Campaign Intern for the Re-Elect Jim McGovern Campaign; and a Congressional Intern in Representative Jim McGovern’s DC Office, as part of the SBS in DC internship program, about which Carla says, “SBS in DC taught me everything I needed for a career in DC, such as how to make professional connections, leverage my skills to get career opportunities, and even how to ride the metro. I am very thankful for the program which inspired me to make the move to DC after graduation.”
