CPT – Curricular Practical Training – for international students doing internships

Curricular Practical Training (CPT) is off-campus employment authorization for F-1 students, which is defined as “alternate work/study, internship, cooperative education, or any other type of required internship or practicum which is offered by sponsoring employers through cooperative agreements with the school.”  

At UMass Amherst, CPT is only required for compensated (paycheck, stipend, scholarship, etc.) off-campus opportunities. Uncompensated off-campus opportunities do not require CPT.  

NOTE: The SBS career office does not require any official paperwork but International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) at UMass does. Click on the link below to follow the CPT process for UMass Amherst students. Do not wait until the last minute to take care of this.
