CPT – Curricular Practical Training – for international students doing internships

Curricular Practical Training (CPT) is off-campus employment authorization for F-1 students, which is defined as “alternate work/study, internship, cooperative education, or any other type of required internship or practicum which is offered by sponsoring employers through cooperative agreements with the school.”

At UMass Amherst, CPT is only required for compensated (paycheck, stipend, scholarship, etc.) off-campus opportunities. Uncompensated off-campus opportunities do not require CPT.

NOTE: The SBS career office does not require any official paperwork. But you are required to register for an internship credit. The official process to register is in SPIRE, and you will need a faculty sponsor for your internship credit. Do not wait until the last minute to take care of this.
