Petition for Late Add (SBS)

This late add petition is for students who are requesting to add a class after the Add/Drop deadline has passed. Late Adds are approved at the discretion of an academic dean for students with extenuating circumstances. The Add/Drop deadline is set by University regulations and exceptions are rare.

We are unlikely to approve a late add for a class a student has never attended.

1. Complete and submit the online form below.
2. Email any supporting documentation to sbsadvising@sbs.umass.edu. In the subject line, please write “Documentation for late add.” This should include an email from the instructor giving permission for you to take this class, your first date of attendance in the class, and the number of credits if this is for research, an independent study, practicum or internship.
3. Call our office (413-577-1057) to schedule an appointment to discuss your petition with one of the SBS Academic Deans. If no one picks up, please be sure to leave a message that includes your name, phone number, and SPIRE ID number along with the reason you are calling.
4. If this request puts you over your credit limit, you also need to submit a Petition for Overload of Credit.

You will receive a confirmation of your appointment once your petition is received. Please reach out immediately if the appointment you are provided does not work for you and an alternate will be found.

Course Information

Important: If you are trying to late add a Five College course, go the Five College Interchange Office in 408 Goodell immediately. As part of the process, they must contact the other school to see if a late add is possible, some do not allow late registration, even if you have been attending the class from the beginning of the semester. The necessary paperwork is available in their office.
